Verse One (Funky DL) Sometimes I gotta’ sit back or spend the whole night playing over all the events throughout my whole life, childhood, adolescence, teenage, adulthood, all the memories, experiences bad or good, the pain, the hurt, the triumphs and the jubilations, from broke pockets to big bank remunerations, the transformation of communication, I’m in the studio working, I ain’t trying to leave the consumers waiting, I’ve seen people close disappear, people toast this my year, then repeat the same the same old song, I just sit on my perch while I’m putting in the work, shaking my head, like how they play the game so wrong? So I made more songs, sharpened up my writing and strike like a billion volts of lightning, and roll like I’m a Knight from dark ages, when I try my best and get it wrong I make some sharp changes, black and gifted, still some worry bout’ these dark faces, I’m not surprised when these world leaders racist and judge you on your pigment, accuse em’, it’s a figment of your imagination, so now I step with some next type of navigation, huh, I got my sword and my shield and I’m skilled, so I’ll be the last standing in the field that’s for real, when I make a beat or write a sentence, I do it with the kind of energy we call relentless. Verse Two (Klashnekoff) Straight… I felt that, and for the last couple years fam I fell back, cah’ I been through hell, felt trapped like a snail. tried carrying this world on my frail back, still I can’t be held back, it’s deeper than rap, can you tell that? it’s all authentic, this world’s tormented, still I said I’d world tour and I meant it, me and DL we both grew up in the trenches, Hackney the ends is, the memories and friendships, the foundation where everything got cemented, that’s why we’re relentless… yeah, but nuff times I’ve been friggin’ stuck, you know the times when everything was fucked! And no labels weren’t picking up, still I weren’t giving up, just like DL and that’s why you have to big him up. Verse Three (Funky DL) I scanned the barcode of life and checked the price and saw the crap, rolled the dice then broke the ice and took a studio device and made prototypes, teach an entire generation how to hold the mic and pimp the game like Dolomite, cos’ this a different kind of hustle, I’m straight def like Dante, Jermaine, Russell, and what’s left is brainpower, the main muscle, can power punch you with each hand, that’s eight knuckles, I make my talents multiply like in the parables of Jesus and I just need some music, some apparel and some sneakers, decide what I decide without me having to give reasons and treating everyday like it’s a fight to keep my freedom, they say the revolution won’t be televised, that’s why the population’s favourite time is ten to five, so I don’t really care about your enterprise, you got stocks and shares, I got rhymes to memorize, so I don’t have to blink twice, I saw you the first time and I’m cool like drink ice, there’s a war going on outside no man is safe from, they killing Generals down to a dude they took a chain from, so I got my sword and my shield, and I’m skilled, so I’m ready and I’m standing in the field that’s for real, when I make a beat or write a sentence, I do it with the kind of energy they call relentless.

Intro / Chorus But first be a person who needs people, people who need people, be a person who needs people, people who need people. Verse One Check it, I feel like a wandering soul, a Nomad, cos when I’m relying on people I find it goes bad, so try and keep myself to myself, I’m self sufficient and never find myself depending on no one else, I’ve seen em’ let me down, I’ve seen em’ talk a good game and say they in my corner, yo but when I turn around, it must have been a hoax, cos I don’t see nothing there unless this is the time they wearing invisible cloaks, they said they had my back, but every time I was in trouble they would “walk on by” like Burt Bacharach, “I say a little prayer” and just wait a little later, but when I check the data there ain’t nothing on the paper, they say love thy neighbour, but when I get to know em’ and just peel away the layers, I’m the MVP, the most valuable player, until somebody told me I should really just be a person who needs pe... Chorus Verse Two They say no man’s an island and people really need communities that they can thrive in, cos the animals that stay in a pack keep on surviving, but I love the way I’m living my life, I keep it private and my blood pressure’s lower when I stay away from others, I don’t wanna live a life in which my peace of mind suffers, so I’m gonna keep my distance like, “no these ain’t my Cousins”, I know I said they was, but for real they really wasn’t, but don’t get offended, I’d rather keep it real on my own than be pretending that I’m the most sociable soul, it’s condescending, so I’mma’ take a step back and cancel my participation, no need to worry bout’ me, I am good in isolation and don’t be looking at me funny like I’m losing it, I’m choosing this although you disapprove of it, assuming it’s the right way to go, but I know you’re gonna tell me I should just be a person who needs people. Chorus Refrain (x16) Yo’, I need you and then I don’t need you. Chorus Outro (Stee Moglie) people who need people, Oh people, people who need pe… (sigh).

Verse One Yo’, Ms Carmelita, Republica de’ Dominica, beautiful creature said she used to live in Costa Rica, Father’s a preacher and her Mother was a Spanish Teacher, I used to tease her cos her smile was like the Mona Lisa, but she a keeper, I fell for her deeper and deeper, Ms Senorita, anything she’d tell me, I’d believed her, cos I was eager to give her all my time and please her, I was a dreamer, I’m mesmerized, so I get weaker, she held composure, so didn’t hand her feelings over, as I got closer, I thought she’d show me more exposure, but she got colder, communication mediocre, and so I told her that I’m prepared to take it slower, and tried to show her that she could put her faith in me, but always got the feeling that she empty like a vacancy and it’s like I’m hypnotised and nothing would awaken me, I don’t believe in magic, but her spell cannot be shaken free. Chorus Hey now, not a tear in her eyes, Hey now, there’s not a tear, Hey now, not a tear in her eyes, Oh, hey now, there’s not a tear. Verse Two Yo, I’d get suspicious and wonder if she was malicious, and started feeling like the love she had for me’s fictitious, it’s like she playing chess and she the Queen, I’m just a Bishop, sometimes I go down on my knees and pray like I’m religious, maybe she’s troubled, cos there’s something she ain’t telling me, cos every time I look into her eyes there’s no serenity and there’s no sincerity, it’s like there ain’t no remedy, and so whenever we come together the chemistry is decomposing, it’s like someone with no emotion, something is broken, I can’t fix it without a notion of what the problem is, but no disclosure, it’s just corrosion, it’s like she made of stone, just like she was completely frozen, I tried to get some advice, they told me leave her, cos maybe she just stoned on smoking Cannabis Sativa, or maybe nothing’s wrong, it’s just the way that you perceive her, I couldn’t tell you either, but I’m stuck on Carmelita (Carmelita, Carmelita…) Chorus Hey now, not a tear in her eyes, hey now, there’s not a tear, hey now, (hey now) not a tear in her eyes, oh, hey now, (hey now) there’s not a tear. Outro (Hey now), hey now, not a tear, (hey now), hey now, not a tear in her eyes, (hey now), hey now, not a tear in her eyes, (hey now), hey now, now, now, oooh! He-ee-yay-ee-yay-ee-yay-ee-yay (x4)

Intro Right now y’all, it’s right now (x4) Verse One I am so chill right now, it’s kinda like a sunset in Brazil right now, I’m sitting back and sipping on my drink right now and there’s nothing on my mind I need to think right now, I’m cool right now, the temperature could have me in the pool right now and nature all around me kinda’ blooms right now, my stereo is playing all my tunes right now, I ain’t got no time for staying in my room right now, cos it’s nice right now, I’m bout’ to get a couple cubes of ice right now, the sky is beautiful with all these lights right now, the day’s about to turn into the night right now, it’s a sight right now and I’m calm right now, a magic in the air, a kind of charm right now and couples everywhere they arm in arm right now, I think I’m bout to head back to the bar right, just guitar right now. Chorus And everything is just so fine, there’s nothing that can stress my mind, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, and everything is just so fine, there’s nothing that can stress my mind. Verse Two I’m at peace right now, ain’t nothing troubling me in the least right now, my positivity is so increased right now and people celebrating in the streets right now, the relief right now is so bless right now I should take a siesta, nonetheless right now, I’ll probably stay awake, don't need to rest right now, can’t think of anything I could request right now, it’s the best right now, I’m so wave right now, I wish that I could bottle up and save right now and literally, I don’t have no complaints right now, the breeze is blowing gently on my face right now, this the place right now, I embrace right now, no feeling in the world can just replace right now, the fellas and the girls can interface right now, the kind of feeling I don’t wanna waste right now, just the bass right now. Chorus Outro La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la (x2)

Intro (Klashnekoff) I remember walking the street yeah, and being a kid and people used to look at you and smile that whole phase of just like, yeah… People were just way more open in regards to speaking to each other and a bit more, just way more, it seemed more… yeah it seemed much more pleasant back then, you nah mean? In terms of the way people interact with each other… yeah, coming back to Hackney and just seeing all the new builds, Et Cetera and um, just seeing all these people, you know, quote, unquote middle class people, walking around really happy, do you know what I’m saying? It was, quite of a shock, it was a bit of a shock… It was a madness as well, the energy, and when you… as you’re entering in the park as a young youth and just that.. That energy of the people, do you know what I mean? Was amazing. Verse One I came a long way from Nightingale, Downs Park and Narroway, Lea bridge, I used to go skating on a Saturday, PJ Records, new releases so I checked em, Wired For Sound was just a couple yards, a couple seconds away, the number seventy-three was Stokey bound from Victoria, Sunny Delight was California, the prefix was 9-8-6 and 9-8-5 and 5-3-3, that’s how you got me on the line and I tried to keep a look out for who I’d see, Going in and out the borough on the 253, or the 106, I used to go check Stixx, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio, the New York Knicks, we used to wear the jerseys and share soda when we thirsty, for no backwash, whoever paid would be the first B, memories of nursery at five years old and it’s the only place that I call home, you know? Chorus They say I’m way too grown to represent postcodes, but it’s part of my history, from the memories of old to the people I know and everything that this place taught me, I’ve been around the world, but I gotta return to the place of my history, from the memories of old to the people I know and everything that this place taught me, they say it ain’t where you’re from, it’s where you’re at, but this place is my history, from the memories of old to the people I know and everything that this place taught me, Hackney, Hackney, Hackney. Verse Two (Yo), I came a long way from Chatsworth, Shacklewell and Evering, fights in the school and I’m hyped on adrenaline, staying out late after class was forbidden, then my Brother got bitten by a Dog up in Wigan, going through the alley by the church where they’re born again, I used to get Well Street mixed up with Morning Lane E5, E8, E9, N16, older kids are luring younger kids into a quick scheme, we didn’t need crime for danger to feel real, take a bicycle with no brakes down to Spring Hill, then you’d see what time it is, this ain’t a joke, so we had to learn to grow a thick skin to be surviving this, just like performers at the 291 club, I’m never on the stairs of an estate when it stunk of weed and urine, cos I’d break out, now let the vocal and the beat play out, no doubt. Chorus Outro (Klashnekoff) Memories of Hackney man! Growing up in the Hood, you get me? Just… just innocent and um, the vibe, do know what I mean? There was definitely a vibe in the air when I was young of just… You know, it’s that community spirit, that vibe of just… Everyone knows everyone, do know what I’m saying? And everyone’s watching everyone, you know, as in Parents watching Children, Et Cetera and you’d have to worry about your neighbours telling your Mum, Do you know what I’m saying? If you got in trouble or what-not, Or if you done something wrong or what-not, Um, Hackney Man! Just so many memories...

Verse One She standing underneath the stars, the constellation complimenting her, he pretty sure nothing more beautiful’s been noticed in his retina, she touch her hair, I don’t know why, I guess it gives her something she can do, (yeah) he starts to stare, he looks away, he look again, it’s like it’s peekaboo, she turn away, she kinda shy and doesn’t quite know what to say to him, (hmm), he try to be the man and play it cool, but yo’ it’s like he’s caving in, she takes a breath, maybe some oxygen will stop these palpitations huh? he tells himself even if she is playing tough, he gone stay brave enough. Chorus And now I’m looking at you standing there, I’m kinda feelin’ you from afar, I wanna move a little closer boy, so you can tell me who you are, and now I’m looking at you standing there, I’m kinda feelin’ you from afar, I wanna move a little closer girl, so you can tell me who you are. Verse Two He wanna speak, but at the risk of sounding stupid, he just thinks some more, (uh-huh) and now she pondering and wondering on why he hesitating for? (yeah), he reminiscing back to something similar, he having déjà vu and so she jammin’ like she playing the Bob Marley and the Wailers tune, he check his watch to see the time, I guess the nervousness is kicking in, (uh), she got her headphones in her hand and now she’s contemplating listening, (yeah), now he’s counting down from ten and by the time he gets to five, (huh), she start to get herself together, cos her bus has just arrived. Chorus Outro (x8) Word up yo’ and you don't stop.
7.
Intro You, you can, you, you, you can, you, you, you can, you, you, you can. Verse One I remember when everything was so carefree, look into my future with 20/20 so clearly, I had my plans mapped out, trying to tell me I wasn’t destined for greatness was aimless, because I lacked doubt, I had to act out everything I saw for myself, I had the faith and I believed like there was nobody else willing to back me up and willing to invest in me, my destiny was trying to do the best for me and I could never rest although they test and yeah they question me, but I would just confess to me I had a different recipe, I’m focusing excessively, but coming up against trials and tribulations, and getting judged upon somebody else’s limitations and in consideration of all the temptations, and all the frustrations, had to keep my motivation, that doesn’t mean I’ve never shed a tear, or had the feeling that the people that I love the most are never there, I’ve always heard people tell me life wasn’t easy, from family that betray you and friends that can play you greezy, from partners you used to love now the sight of them make you queasy, if I came back from the future and told me, I wouldn't believe me, I’m two score and I’ve seen so much, but thank God he let me breathe so much, so I can be so much and from the bottom heart, yeah I know it ain’t that easy but I gotta tell you anyway… Chorus (x2) You can win, as long as you keep your head to the sky. Verse Two Yeah I get it when you ain’t getting the credit for the merits and they edit, cos you don’t fit they aesthetics yo’, yeah I see it, but I almost guarantee it, you can overcome these obstacles when you reach and believe it yo’, yeah I heard it, they saying you don’t deserve it, cos they judge you like they perfect, but don’t make that be the verdict yo’, yeah I know it, but I’m telling you, you owe it to yourself to go and show the world your wealth, ain’t talking money yo’, huh and it’s an everyday struggle, where you trying to build a picture, but some pieces of the puzzle are missing and every time you try and speak, they try and muzzle, won’t listen, it’s like a competition that you trying to win, sometimes it seems impossible, but searching deep within for a level of resilience to take it on the chin, so whether you a long way from home, or suffering something you don't condone, or facing something unknown, or wanna be around somebody, but you always alone, or if you’re contemplating giving up, or leaving the zone, the only thing that I can say is what I told you before and just because it’s from the heart, I’m gonna say it once more, I know that you’ve seen so much, but you so blessed to get to breathe so much, so you can be so much and from my very inner core, yeah I know that it ain’t easy, but I gotta tell you anyways… Chorus You can win, as long as you keep your head to the sky, oooh, you can win yeah, oooh, you can win, ye-eh-ah, you-can-win-as-long-as-you-keep-your-head to the sky, you can win, as long as you keep - your head to the sky. Outro I know that you’ve seen so much, but you so blessed to get to breathe so much, so you can see so much and from my very inner core, yeah I know that it ain’t easy, but I gotta tell you anyway... I know that you’ve seen so much, but you so blessed to get to breathe so much, so you can be so much... (oh-oh you can win, as long as you keep your head to the sky).

about

Knowing of Funky DL for years, many to this day still ask what does DL stand for? Well DL introduces the title of his new album based on the D in DL, which stands for "Def".

A unique 7-track excursion with minimal use of breaks, but instead relies on live instrumentation with Alex Bonfanti on bass, Ed Riches on acoustic and electric guitar and the magnificent Xantoné Blacq on keys. The maestro himself puts down the drums and hand picks the melodies based on an interesting array of samples he discovered, but wanted to hear and then record these riffs played live.

Coming fully equipped with sharp rhymes and witty storytelling (Ms Carmelita), DL also introduces his first album where every single track has a featured artist. The UK's Hip-Hop jewel Klashnekoff appears on the ode to Hackney, "Memories of Old", alongside DL's long time collaborator Sienna; as well as newcomer Stee Moglie and the legendary Xantoné Blacq making their memorable vocal appearances during the course of this brilliant summer filled set, which really is truly DEF.
